About Bacteriostatic Water 10ml
About Bacteriostatic Water 10ml
Origin Peptides Bacteriostatic Water 10ml is a sealed, sterile, multi-dose vial of water for laboratory use containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative. It is the standard diluent for reconstituting lyophilised research peptides in the Origin Peptides range. Every vial carries a batch number and a research-use notice. Supplied strictly for laboratory research; not for human or veterinary use.
What bacteriostatic water is
Bacteriostatic water is sterile water to which benzyl alcohol has been added at 0.9%. The benzyl alcohol inhibits the growth of bacteria in the vial after the stopper has been punctured, which is why a multi-dose vial can be drawn from more than once, whereas plain sterile water for injection is single use. It is the diluent most commonly cited in the peptide research literature for reconstituting lyophilised (freeze-dried) peptide powder before laboratory use.
Benzyl alcohol does not behave the same way with every molecule. Roy and colleagues (Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 2005) found that 0.9% benzyl alcohol caused more aggregation of a freeze-dried recombinant protein, interleukin-1 receptor antagonist, than plain water did, while Li and colleagues (Molecular Pharmaceutics, 2022) found that benzyl alcohol did not aggregate a 31 residue acylated peptide that another preservative, m-cresol, did. Bacteriostatic water is therefore a well characterised diluent, but its fit with a particular compound is something laboratories check in the literature.
Handling and storage
Store the sealed vial at room temperature and protect it from light. Swab the stopper before each puncture and use a fresh sterile needle every time. Once the stopper has been punctured, discard the vial after 28 days regardless of how much remains. Do not use if the solution is cloudy or contains particles. Keep the batch number for certificate lookup.
Which vial size do I need?
A 10 ml vial reconstitutes several 5 mg or 10 mg peptide vials at the concentrations typically described in the literature, so one vial of bacteriostatic water is usually enough to pair with a small research order. It is listed as an accessory alongside every lyophilised Origin Peptides vial.

Lab testing
Every bottle carries a batch number under the product name. Each batch is tested by an independent UK laboratory for identity and purity, and the certificate is published against that number.

Questions
Is bacteriostatic water the same as sterile water? No. Sterile water for injection contains no preservative and is single use once opened. Bacteriostatic water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which allows repeated withdrawals from the same vial for up to 28 days.
Does bacteriostatic water come with Origin Peptides vials? No. Every Origin Peptides vial is supplied as lyophilised powder on its own, and bacteriostatic water is listed separately in the research peptides UK range so laboratories can order the number of 10 ml vials they need.
What does the benzyl alcohol in bacteriostatic water do? At 0.9% it inhibits bacterial growth after the stopper has been punctured, which is what separates bac water from single use water. The bacteriostatic water guide covers bac water in more detail, and the explainer on what are research peptides sets out where it fits in peptide research.
Is a certificate of analysis available? Yes. Every batch is third-party tested and the certificate can be matched to the batch number printed on the vial. Quote the batch number through the contact form if you need the report for your research records.
Research use only. This product is supplied strictly for laboratory and research purposes and is not for human or veterinary use. It is not a medicine and not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Sold to persons aged 18 or over only.
