What the published research says
BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound 157) is a synthetic pentadecapeptide derived from a protein sequence found in human gastric juice. It is one of the most studied peptides in the preclinical literature, with several hundred published animal studies from Sikiric and colleagues at the University of Zagreb spanning three decades.
The published work is almost entirely in rodents. Studies report accelerated healing of transected Achilles tendon (Staresinic and colleagues, Journal of Orthopaedic Research, 2003), muscle crush injuries, ligament transections and gastric and colonic lesions, together with effects on the nitric oxide system and on new blood vessel formation (angiogenesis). Chang and colleagues reported in the Journal of Applied Physiology in 2011 that BPC-157 increased tendon fibroblast outgrowth and migration in vitro.
There are no published, peer reviewed human clinical trials of BPC-157. A phase I study of an oral formulation was registered but results were not published, and the compound is on the WADA prohibited list under S0 (non-approved substances). Everything above comes from animal and cell models, and it should be read that way.
