What the published research says
SS-31 (elamipretide) is a synthetic tetrapeptide that localises to the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it binds cardiolipin. It was developed by Stealth BioTherapeutics.
The compound has an extensive published record: Szeto's group described the mitochondria-targeting mechanism (Szeto, AAPS Journal, 2006); animal studies report effects in models of ischaemia-reperfusion, heart failure and age-related muscle decline; and human trials include phase II and III studies in Barth syndrome (TAZPOWER), primary mitochondrial myopathy (MMPOWER-3) and dry age-related macular degeneration. In 2025 the FDA reviewed elamipretide for Barth syndrome.
