What the published research says
TB-500 is a synthetic fragment of thymosin beta-4, a 43-amino-acid protein present in almost all mammalian cells, where it binds and sequesters actin monomers and regulates cell migration.
The thymosin beta-4 literature is broad. Malinda and colleagues reported accelerated dermal wound closure in rats (Journal of Investigative Dermatology, 1999); Bock-Marquette and colleagues reported cardiac repair after myocardial infarction in mice (Nature, 2004); and Sosne and colleagues published a series on corneal wound healing. A phase II human trial of full-length thymosin beta-4 in venous stasis ulcers (Guarnera and colleagues, Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2010) reported faster healing at one dose level.
TB-500 as sold for research is the actin-binding fragment (residues 17 to 23) or a related synthetic sequence, not the full-length protein studied in the human trial. It is prohibited in sport under WADA S0. Any account of its effects should distinguish the fragment from the full protein.
